I like to explore new mediums and especially enjoy making craft. I sometimes make clay models and more expressive paintings in preparation for illustrating a picture book. In the past I have produced some handmade items for gift shops like teacups and teddies.
I am an avid contemporary art appreciator and particularly love seeing textile and installation art. Like most people I went through a massive knitting phase but I still I make the occasional piece of abstract contemporary knitting. I like to create three-dimensional sculptures from one material, using knots and crochet techniques. Part of the artwork is exploring how tall I can make a structure before it collapses. I use organic patterns mimicking the way nature and vines grow and expand.
Craft and especially crochet are associated with the domestic environment. Although many a craft object are functional, the works I create are deliberately functionless and sometimes comment on the often kitsch tradition of the medium.
